J. R. R. Tolkien’s Lord of The Rings Trilogy Revolved around the story of a ring that contained immeasurable power. While this ring was desirable, it was equally dangerous; wearing it led to corruption and insanity. (Tolkien) While The Lord of the Rings was simply a fantasy, it conveyed a real message about the danger produced when a man is given power. For centuries, men have pondered over ideas similar to this; how much power is too much power? And how much power should a man employ to hold an ideal government? This governmental â€Å"ideal† is what Niccolo Machiavelli’s The Prince strived to achieve and how Tomas Hobbes’ governmental steps in The Leviathan resulted. During the dramatic changes of the Italian Renaissance, The Prince was†¦show more content†¦The reason Machiavelli was so concerned about a good reputation was because absolute power only comes once the people have given up their rights. Thomas Hobbes concluded that to keep pe ace, â€Å"Men must renounce their right to use whatever they consider necessary for self-preservation, on the condition that other men agree to do likewise† (qtd. In Smith ch.11). This submission sets the government up so that the sovereign is left with â€Å"complete discretion in deciding what to do† (qtd. In Smith ch.11). Once power is achieved and sovereignty remains only in the hands of the authority, focus must shift to the principles of leadership. Machiavelli, specifically, had an idea in mind of how a leader should conduct himself and what morals he should value. Straightforwardly, he explained that he considered it unnecessary for a prince to have moral qualities; a prince should instead only â€Å"seem† to have them. Thus, it is â€Å"useful to seem compassionate, faithful, humane, [and] honest†; however, if one possesses these attributes, it can be destructive (Machiavelli 95). This is since a prince â€Å"is often required to act again st faith, against charity, against humaneness, and against religion† to maintain his position (Machiavelli 95). Regarding reputation, Machiavelli clarifies whether it is better to be feared or loved by the people. The actors and producers shine a false spotlight on â€Å"reality†. â€Å"Reality television is defined as a ‘TV show observing real-life situation: television programs often deliberately manufactured situations, and that monitor their emotions and behavior’† (Paredes 26). A story about seeing MxPx Essay On November 13(th) I went to Tramps in New York to see one of my favorite bands, MxPx. MxPx is a Christian pop-punk band. Pop punk basically means happy punk. The band members, are Mike Herrera who plays bass and sings, Tom Wisniewski who plays guitar and Yuri Ruley plays drums. They played about 10 songs, all of which I knew. Some of their songs have to do with society problems through the eyes of a teenager. At the show, the first song they played was one of my favorites, Teenage Politics. Some of the lyrics to this song are, No Im not mad but I think they forget what its like and how hard it is to be a teenager. This is a new day and age, we read a different book where Elvis aint the rage and polyester aint the look. Is it time again to disagree about anything, everything and whats on TV its a vicious circle, never ending a linear equation worldly extending. No, Ill never be like you; Ill never be like you. Its just a fast paced love song. My favorite lyrics of the song are Andrea, I say your name and all that I can do is think about the way you smiled and kinda sorta held my hand. Went out for coffee in what must have been the smallest town in Kentucky. Andrea, we walked together down dirt road by the bridge then we sat by each other and talked about a few things. You looked at me I looked at you before you know its time to go.All of their songs are very fast paced. They all have heavy drumbeats. In fact, all punk bands have this certain kind of quick and repeated drumbeat. Thats how you can tell if they are punk or not. MxPx also has a very distinct ba ss line.
